Leith Theatre – Memories Project

Sharyn and Stephen from CMC thoroughly enjoyed working on this pilot project with the passionate and dedicated team at Leith Theatre. It felt hugely rewarding for all involved, including the various contributors. By listening to and recording people talk about their personal experiences we created an effective workflow for populating the memory bank–providing guidance on digital capture, audio editing, file management and documentation.

Our interviewees shared a wide range of recollections—from a local resident who experienced a bomb drop on both the theatre and her home during the Second World War, to music fans who attended gigs in the 1970s, such as Slade and Cockney Rebel. There were also performers from Gilbert & Sullivan productions and a former Edinburgh Corporation employee who fondly remembers his financial and front of house duties in the 1960s.

Leith Theatre recently secured National Lottery Heritage Funding for their project ‘Back to Life: the theatre that isn’t just a theatre’. The team are now developing a blueprint for restoring and reviving the space while keeping its original charm intact. A small part of this project will be for the team to develop their oral history skills in the future and to continue to invest in this valuable asset as part of their community outreach planning.
